Ecofol is a brand of Calcium folinate pentahydrate, a salt of folinic acid used in chemotherapy involving methotrexate. Ecofol is a medication used in combination with other chemotherapy drugs to enhance effectiveness or as a chemoprotectant. It is also useful in treating megaloblastic anemia. Folinic acid, the active ingredient, is a 5-formyl derivative of tetrahydrofolic acid that is readily converted to other reduced folic acid derivatives, providing vitamin activity equivalent to folic acid.
Folinic acid allows for some purine/pyrimidine synthesis to occur in the presence of dihydrofolate reductase inhibition, enabling some normal DNA replication and RNA transcription processes to proceed.
