Zolep 20mg Capsule is a medicine that reduces the amount of acid produced in your stomach. It is used in the treatment of acid-related diseases of the stomach and intestine such as heartburn, acid reflux, peptic ulcer disease, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Zolep 20mg Capsule is best taken one hour before a meal, preferably in the morning. The dose will depend on your underlying condition and how you respond to the medicine. You should keep on taking it as prescribed even if your symptoms disappear quickly. You can increase the efficiency of the treatment by eating smaller meals more often and avoiding caffeinated drinks (like tea and coffee) and spicy or fatty foods.
Zolep 20mg Capsule is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach which provide relief from symptoms of heartburn, acid reflux, peptic ulcer disease, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Can I take Zolep 20mg Capsule with domperidone?
Combining Zolep 20mg Capsule and domperidone is generally safe. There have been no clinical reports indicating harmful effects when taken together. A fixed-dose combination of these two medicines is also available for convenient use.
What should I know before taking Zolep 20mg Capsule?
Before starting Zolep 20mg Capsule, notify your doctor if you are currently using medications containing atazanavir and nelfinavir (used for HIV treatment). Inform your healthcare provider about any liver issues, persistent diarrhea or vomiting, black stools (blood-stained stools), unusual weight loss, difficulty swallowing, or stomach pain or indigestion. Inform your doctor if you have osteoporosis or are currently taking corticosteroids, which can further exacerbate this risk. Your healthcare provider might advise on preventative measures like calcium or vitamin D supplementation.
What are the long-term side effects of Zolep 20mg Capsule?
Prolonged use (over 3 months) may result in some long-term side effects. These include low magnesium levels, potentially leading to fatigue, confusion, dizziness, trembling, or lightheadedness. You might also experience muscle twitches or irregular heartbeat. For prolonged use lasting over a year, the risk of bone fractures increases due to calcium deficiency (especially hip, wrist, or spine), as well as stomach infections and vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to anemia, causing fatigue, weakness, or paleness. Other potential side effects include palpitations, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, indigestion, loss of appetite, flatulence, and nerve problems such as numbness, tingling, or difficulty walking.
Does Zolep 20mg Capsule cause vitamin deficiencies?
It may lead to vitamin B12 and vitamin C deficiency. Oral intake of Zolep requires an acidic environment for absorption; however, this medicine causes a decrease in gastric acid secretion. As a result, supplementation with vitamin B12 may be necessary. The clinical significance of the decrease in vitamin C levels is not well established. Therefore, vitamin C supplementation is not recommended.
Can Zolep 20mg Capsule be used by cardiac patients?
Cardiac patients can take this medication as prescribed by their healthcare providers. However, it's essential to be aware that some medications (such as clopidogrel and digoxin) commonly used in cardiac patients may interact with Zolep 20mg Capsule. - Avoid excessive intake of carbonated beverages/soft drinks
- citrus juices
- fried food
- caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking.
- Avoid eating late at night or before bedtime.
- Inform your doctor if you get watery diarrhea, fever or stomach pain that does not go away.
- Inform your doctor if you do not feel better after taking it for 14 days as you may be suffering from some other problem that needs attention.
- Long-term use of Zolep 20mg Capsule can cause weak bones and a deficiency of minerals such as magnesium. Take adequate dietary intake of calcium and magnesium or their supplements as prescribed by your doctor.
- Do not stop taking medication without talking to your doctor.
- Consult your doctor right away if you develop decreased urination, edema (swelling due to fluid retention), lower back pain, nausea, fatigue, and rash or fever. These could be signs of a kidney problem.
Alcohol
It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Zolep 20mg Capsule.
Breastfeed
Zolep 20mg Capsule is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug may pass into the breastmilk and harm the baby.
Pregnancy
