Xarelto 20mg Tablet is a medicine known as an anticoagulant or blood thinner. It helps prevent and treat blood clots. Xarelto 20mg Tablet is commonly used in patients with irregular heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation) to prevent clot formation. It also reduces the risk of getting clots in people who have undergone knee or hip replacement surgeries. It may be taken with or without food. Take it at the same time each day for maximum benefits. You may need to take this medicine for many years even for life in some cases. Do not stop taking it or change the dose without guidance from your doctor.
Xarelto 20mg Tablet is a novel oral anticoagulant (NOAC). It works by stopping a clotting factor called factor Xa from working. This helps prevent the formation of blood clots in the body.
What are the potential side effects of taking Xarelto 20mg Tablets?
The most common side effects include prolonged or excessive bleeding, breathlessness (which may indicate internal bleeding), weakness, tiredness, paleness, dizziness, headache, and unexplained swelling. In some cases, more severe reactions such as skin and allergic issues, bruising, coughing up blood, and pain/swelling in the limbs can occur. Additionally, this medication may cause a decrease in platelet count and increase bilirubin levels. Some individuals may experience fainting episodes, rapid heartbeat, or dry mouth. If any side effects persist or worsen, it is essential to contact your doctor immediately.
What is Xarelto 20mg Tablet used for?
Xarelto 20mg Tablet functions as a blood thinner by preventing the formation of clots within blood vessels and stopping recurring blood clots in veins. It may be prescribed to treat deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the legs) and pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs).
Is Xarelto 20mg Tablet a safe medication?
While Xarelto 20mg Tablet has its benefits, it carries a risk of increased bleeding due to reduced blood clotting ability. In some cases, this can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening bleeding episodes. The likelihood of such events is higher when taking Xarelto with other blood thinning medications. It is crucial to inform your doctor if you notice even minor bleeding while on this medication.
What food items should be avoided while taking a blood thinner like Xarelto 20mg Tablet?
It's recommended to avoid consuming grapefruit and grapefruit juice, as they can slow down the metabolism of Xarelto, potentially increasing bleeding risk. However, individuals taking warfarin (a different type of blood thinner) should also limit their intake of vitamin K-rich foods such as spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, mustard greens, and green tea, which may affect clotting ability. These dietary restrictions do not apply to Xarelto 20mg Tablet users.
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Xarelto 20mg Tablet may be taken with or without food but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
