Scotcin MZS Syrup is given to children for the treatment of bacterial infections of the teeth, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, and genital tract. Scotcin MZS Syrup is a combination of three active ingredients, given to children for the treatment of bacterial infections. It is also given as an empirical antibiotic for infected diarrhea mixed with blood and serious infections like peritonitis.
Scotcin MZS Syrup is a combination of three active ingredients. While two of its ingredients, namely ofloxacin and metronidazole are antibiotics, simethicone is a gas-absorbing agent that improves gastric tolerability of the combination..The antibiotic ingredients interfere with the genetic material of bacteria by impairing its DNA. This kills the infection-causing bacteria, preventing its growth and stopping the infection..On the other hand, Simethicone binds with the gas bubbles produced as a result of the other two ingredients or as a result of some other problem. By doing so, it aids in the removal of gases and provides relief in stomach pain and bloating.
What should I tell the doctor before giving Scotcin MZS Syrup to my child?
You must tell the doctor if your child is suffering from heart disease, seizures, psychiatric disorders, diabetes, photoallergy (allergy from sunlight), neuromuscular disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, or genetic disorders involving blood vessels. This is because there is a possibility that Scotcin MZS Syrup may aggravate these conditions and result in complications.
Can Scotcin MZS Syrup be given along with cough and cold medicines?
No, do not give Scotcin MZS Syrup with cough and cold medicines. The reason being, one of the ingredients present in Scotcin MZS Syrup can interact with alcohol-containing medicines like cough syrups and can lead to disulfiram reaction, causing nausea, vomiting, flushing, dizziness, etc.
What if I give an overdose of Scotcin MZS Syrup by mistake?
An extra dose of Scotcin MZS Syrup is unlikely to harm. However, if you think you have given too much to your child, immediately speak to a doctor. Overdose may cause unwanted side effects such as seizures, tremors, severe headache, sudden weakness, blood cell abnormalities, and rapid and irregular heartbeat. Rush to your child’s doctor if you notice any of these symptoms.
What should I do if my child shows no improvement even after taking Scotcin MZS Syrup for the prescribed duration?
It could mean that Scotcin MZS Syrup is unable to kill the infection-causing bacteria. In such a case, visit your child’s doctor who may prescribe some other antibiotic that has a higher efficacy against the disease-causing bacteria. Remember, that sometimes, such antibiotics may have to be given by IV route (intravenous injection) in the hospital.
Can other medicines be given at the same time as Scotcin MZS Syrup?
Scotcin MZS Syrup can sometimes interact with other medicines or substances. Tell your doctor about any other medicines your child is taking before starting Scotcin MZS Syrup. Also, check with your child’s doctor before giving any medicine to your child.
How should Scotcin MZS Syrup be stored?
Store Scotcin MZS Syrup at room temperature, in a dry place, away from direct heat and light. Children may accidentally consume medicines if they find them while playing around. So, make sure that all the medicines are kept away from their reach and sight.
Can I get my child vaccinated while on treatment with Scotcin MZS Syrup?
Antibiotics usually do not interfere with the ingredients in vaccines or cause a bad reaction in a child who has just been vaccinated. However, children taking antibiotics should not get vaccinated until they recover from the illness. As soon as your child feels better, the vaccine can be given.
My child has been passing red-brown urine ever since he started taking Scotcin MZS Syrup? Is it normal?
Scotcin MZS Syrup contains active ingredient metronidazole, which causes red-brown urine. It is not pathogenic but a side effect. It subsides once the medicine is stopped after the completion of the treatment.

- Diarrhea is a common side effect of this medicine. If it occurs, make sure your child drinks plenty of water.
- Your child may have an altered taste or furry tongue (coating of Scotcin MZS Syrup on tongue) after taking Scotcin MZS Syrup. Eating citrus fruit or sipping plenty of water or fruit juice may help.
- Do not give any calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin, or antacid within 2 hours of taking Scotcin MZS Syrup as these can affect the absorption of the medicine.
- Never use this medicine for the common cold and flu as they are caused by viruses and Scotcin MZS Syrup treats only bacterial infections.
- Discontinue Scotcin MZS Syrup and inform the doctor immediately if your child develops a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or has difficulty in breathing.
- Only give Scotcin MZS Syrup to your child for their current infection. Never save medicine for future illnesses.
