Key Information

Short Description

Safclav DS Syrup is an antibiotic medicine that helps treat bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, chest, lungs, teeth, skin, and urinary tract.

Dosage Form

Syrup

Introduction

Safclav DS Syrup is an antibiotic medicine that helps treat bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, chest, lungs, teeth, skin, and urinary tract. It is capable of killing bacteria that have become resistant to other therapies and thus also helps treat tuberculosis that is resistant to other treatments.

Directions for Use

Your child must complete the entire course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again or cause another infection.

How it works

Safclav DS Syrup is an antibiotic. It has two active agents amoxycillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxycillin works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering (cell wall) essential for the survival of the bacteria. Whereas clavulanic acid serves a special purpose of inhibiting an enzyme (beta-lactamase) that is produced by resistant bacteria. This makes the combination of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid an effective line of treatment for many types of infections.

Quick Tips

Your child must complete the entire course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again or cause another infection. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water in case diarrhea develops as a side effect. Never give Safclav DS Syrup until and unless prescribed by the doctor. Do not give Safclav DS Syrup to treat common cold and flu-like symptoms caused by viruses. Check ‘expiry’ before giving Safclav DS Syrup to your child. Immediately discard all the expired medicines.

Frequently asked questions

What medications can be taken with Safclav DS Syrup?

Safclav DS Syrup may interact with other medications or substances. Inform your child's doctor about any other medicines they are taking before starting treatment with Safclav DS Syrup. Additionally, consult the doctor before giving any medication to your child.

Can children be vaccinated while on treatment with Safclav DS Syrup?

Antibiotics like Safclav DS Syrup typically do not interfere with vaccine ingredients or cause adverse reactions in children who have just been vaccinated. However, children taking antibiotics should wait until they recover from the illness before getting vaccinated.

Which lab tests may be necessary for long-term treatment with Safclav DS Syrup?

During prolonged therapy, the doctor may perform periodic kidney and liver function tests to monitor your child's condition.

Can the recommended dose of Safclav DS Syrup be increased?

No, taking a higher dose than recommended can increase the risk of side effects. If symptoms worsen, consult the doctor for re-evaluation.

When should I stop giving Safclav DS Syrup to my child?

Do not stop administering this medicine unless the full treatment course is complete, even if symptoms improve. The infection may still be being effectively treated, and stopping early can lead to incomplete recovery.

Can Safclav DS Syrup cause diarrhea?

Yes, Safclav DS Syrup may cause diarrhea as it kills harmful bacteria and can affect the helpful bacteria in your child's stomach. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water or other fluids if they experience diarrhea. If symptoms persist and dehydration signs appear (less frequent urination with dark-colored and strong-smelling urine), consult a doctor.

Should antibiotics be used for viral common colds?

Mostly, bacterial infections do not follow viral infections. Using antibiotics in viral infections can increase the risk of side effects. Only use antibiotics after consulting your child's doctor.

What does yellow or green mucus in my child's nose mean?

Yellow or green mucus in the nose is normal during a common cold, as it thickens and changes color. Symptoms often last for 7-10 days.

When should I seek immediate medical attention for my child?

Seek immediate medical attention if your child experiences serious allergic reactions (breathing problems, skin rashes), gastrointestinal infections (diarrhea), or liver damage (weakness, paleness, vomiting). These side effects are rare but require expert attention.
