Mesacol 1g Suppository is an anti-inflammatory medicine used to treat a type of bowel disease known as ulcerative colitis. It is used when the lining tissue of the inner rectum becomes inflamed (proctitis). Mesacol 1g Suppository is only for rectal route and should not be taken orally. It must be used under the supervision of a doctor or healthcare professional. Stay in a lying position for at least 15 minutes after the insertion of suppositories. The dose will depend on what you are being treated for but take it exactly as your doctor prescribes. You should keep taking this medicine for as long as your doctor recommends. If you stop treatment too early your symptoms may come back and your condition may worsen.
Mesacol 1g Suppository is an aminosalicylate. It works directly on the site of inflammation (swelling) in the lower parts of large intestine (colon and rectum) to provide rapid relief from attacks of ulcerative colitis. It suppresses the production of chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause intestinal inflammation, thereby reducing ulceration, bleeding, and painful symptoms.
Remove the wrapper from the suppository before inserting it. Keep lying down for about 15 minutes after insertion so that the suppository does not come out before it melts.
Breastfeed
Mesacol 1g Suppository is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug may pass into the breastmilk and harm the baby. If you are taking Mesacol 1g Suppository, monitor the baby for diarrhea.
Pregnancy
Mesacol 1g Suppository may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Although there are limited studies in humans, animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and any potential risks before prescribing it to you. Please consult your doctor.
